Description
The Malaysian Tapir is mostly nocturnal, meaning it is active at night and lives in dense jungles and forests in South East Asia. It is related to horses and rhinos.
They have a stout, sparsely haired body a bit like a pig and unusually have three toes on their back feet and four on their front. They have a short, bent nose for grasping leaves and fruit and play an important role in seed dispersal.
Four species exist—the Brazilian (Lowland) tapir, Malayan tapir, Baird’s tapir, and Mountain tapir.
Their name comes from the Tupi language.
