Description
Shetland ponies are one of the smallest, yet strongest, pony breeds in the world, originating from Scotland’s Shetland Isles over 4,000 years ago. They are small, usually measuring between 28 and 42 inches (7–10.5 hands) at the withers. They have stocky, muscular bodies, short legs, and long, thick manes and tails. They grow a dense double coat in winter to shed rain and snow. They are long-lived, with an average lifespan of 20–25 years, and it is not unusual for them to live over 30 years. Shetland ponies require consistent training due to their high intelligence and tendency to take advantage of handlers.
