Description

After a pregnancy of 15 months, giraffe calves are born front feet first and can fall 6 feet (approx. 2m) to the floor in birth – this can help them to start breathing.
They can weigh up to 45-70kg at birth and start walking within an hour of birth. They can double thei height in their first year.
They drink their mother’s milk to start with but start eating vegetation within a few weeks.
They are often left in a “creche” with other calves while mother’s forage for themselves.
