Description
The fairy penguin (or little blue penguin) is the world’s smallest penguin species, standing only 30–40 cm tall and weighing about 1 kg. It is native to the coasts of southern Australia and New Zealand and are known for their slate-blue feathers, nocturnal return to land, and loud, social calls. They are carnivores, eating small fish, krill, and squid, usually hunting in shallow coastal waters. In the wild, they live on average for 6 years. They typically lay two eggs in underground burrows, with both parents sharing incubation duties. They can swim at speeds of 2–4 km/h, with bursts up to 12 km/h.
