Description
Black bears are the most common and smallest species of bear in North America.
They are good climbers and are omnivores, meaning they eat grasses, berries, nuts, insects, fish, and occasionally small mammals.
They inhabit forests, mountains, and swamps throughout North America, from Alaska to Mexico. Primarily solitary, they are active during the day or night. They are highly intelligent, curious, and can run up to 25 mph. They may den for up to 6 months in winter, during which they do not eat, drink, or pass waste. Cubs (usually 2-3) are born in the den in January or February.
